What Are Sump Pumps?
Sump pumps are electrical appliances installed in sump pits for pumping excess water that collects in the pit to the outside of a home. The sump pump is the most critical part of basement waterproofing. Two types of sump pumps are pedestal pumps and submersible pumps.
a. Pedestal Pumps These pumps are placed outside the sump pit, out of the water, and above the sump basin.
b. Submersible Pumps These are pumps that are placed underwater in the sump pit or sump pump basin. The pump motor is waterproof.
Components of a Sump Pump
The sump pump is made up of many parts, and the overall life span of the sump pump depends on all these parts and other factors. Below are the components that make up sump pumps.
a. Motors Sump pumps are designed with centrifugal motors. These motors come in different capacities from 1/4 to 1 horsepower (HP), which defines their ability to handle water pressure and flooding without difficulty.
b. Impeller This is a fan-like device fixed to the bottom of the motor assembly. The impeller rotates to create the centrifugal force that enables pumping water through it.
c. Discharge The discharge is the cylindrical tube with an opening at both ends for funneling water into the discharge pipe and taking water out of the sump.
d. Discharge Pipe This could be a PVC pipe, a copper pipe, or a garden hose but PVC pipes are most preferred due to durability and anti-corrosion properties.
e. Switches The most common type of switch is the float switch that has a float attached to trigger that switch when water pushes it up, and that switch turns on the motor.
f. Check Valve It is placed in the discharge to block water from returning into the motor and keep it safe.
What Is The Average Life Span of a Sump Pump?
The average life span of a sump is from 7 to 10 years. However, that life span of a sump pump depends on:
a. Size and Capacity A pump that is too small may not pump out water effectively and would have a shorter life due to being overwhelmed by the volume of water it pumps. It is essential to choose the right size and capacity.
b. Usage That frequency of usage is another factor that determines the longevity of the sump pump.
c. Maintenance Regular maintenance can help to prolong the life span of a sump pump. Check the pump regularly to ensure that it is working correctly. Remove debris, sediment, stones, and sand from the sump pit.
